What is La Stone?
LaStone Therapy is possibly the ultimate in massage techniques. It combines massage with the use of smooth hot basalt lava stones and chilled marble stones. The hot and cold rocks encourage blood flow through the muscle tissues which flushes toxins and triggers the body's self healing mechanisms. LaStone Therapy can be nurturing in style, or deep tissue where appropriate.

What stones are used and why?

Hot basalt lava stones are used for their penetrative warmth to help release deep muscular tension, congestion and improve the general circulation. There is something deeply spiritual about being cocooned in the heat of these lava stones, as if enveloped by a warm embrace in the arms of Mother Earth.

Chilled marble stones are used for their cooling, decongesting and cleansing action. They have a refreshing and invigorating action on the body.

Each different shape and size has a specific role in LaStone Therapy. Some stones are placed on the couch, to line up either side of your spine, which you lie on. Other stones are placed on the chakra points of the body, naturally balancing these vortexes of energy, and others are tucked around the body to infuse it with their warmth.

How does La Stone work?
Both hot and cold stones are used for massage, enabling thermotherapy to take place. The hot stones draw fresh blood to the area being worked, which nourishes the tissues and aids the release of stored and locked in wastes from tense muscles, whilst the cold pushes the blood away, draining with it the toxins and waste products which have been trapped in the tense muscles. This reduces inflammation and encourages a further influx of fresh oxygenated blood. This constant dance between temperatures affects the blood and lymph. Mary Hannigan, the founder of LaStone therapy, calls the physiological response to this alternating of temperatures - vascular gymnastics. It is this response within our body, which works as a catalyst to assist the body in self-healing.

The physiological benefits of alternating hot and cold to the body have long been scientifically and medically proven, and is a very familiar concept to physiotherapists. It has long been the basis of a lot of popular spa therapies such as sauna’s and cold plunge pools. LaStone gives these traditional practices a more modern approach, and LaStone delivers this therapy with unerring elegance.

How can La Stone help me?
LaStone is extremely energising and warming for the body, it nourishes the soul and relaxes the mind. By using the stones in combination with traditional massage techniques, LaStone is able to reach deeper levels than a regular massage. LaStone is ideal for back pain, stress related conditions and sluggish systems. LaStone Therapy is far more than a massage with hot stones; it is a multidimensional treatment that reaches the very soul.
